Introducing the water transfer plan of Oman Sea to Isfahan

Introducing the water transfer plan of Oman Sea to Isfahan

The region of central plateau of Iran is especially important for the development of the non-oil economy because of its high industrial, mining and tourism potential as well as its economic-social importance and strategic role in political geography and gross national product.

Due to its geographical location, Isfahan province has certain limitations and potentials; one of its main limitations is the limitation in the volume of water needed for development. Due to its relative advantages, the lack of water in this region has become the basis for the emergence of social and security crises. Smooth topography, being located on the main route from north to south and east to west, moderate and four-season climate, the existence of necessary infrastructure for development … are some of the relative advantages of this province providing main reasons for migration to it. The existence of these relative advantages has been the basis for the development of all kinds of industries in this province, especially in the Zayandeh Rood basin. Foreign security threats have long made this province a suitable place for the establishment of large and mother industries.

Zayandeh Rood basin has a special place in Isfahan province so that more than 90% of the province’s industries are located in it. The presence of water, being close to the main infrastructures such as the airport, the railway, the existence of higher educational centers, … differentiate this watershed from other parts of the province.

The existence of water crisis in the Zayandeh Rood catchment area during the last two decades has turned this area into one of the centers of social and security crisis. In order to overcome this crisis, transferring water from Oman Sea to supply water needed by industries is on the agenda.

The purpose of this project in the first phase is to supply water to large industries located in this catchment area. It is obvious that due to the establishment of most industries in this province and the possibility of using this water by other industries, it will be possible to transfer water to other industries in other parts of the province.

The location and scope of the project

The location of the project is in Hormozgan, Kerman, Yazd and Isfahan provinces. The project starts from 35 kilometers east of Minab in Hormozgan province, from water extraction and desalination facilities, and continues to the north-west through the heights of Dehbarez and Sahraroud and exits Hormozgan province in Sangband region. The pipeline enters Kerman province from south of Faryab and continues to the southwest of Sirjan. After crossing Sirjan salt bed and then south of Babak city and continuing the route to the northwest, it enters Yazd province from the vicinity of Marvast town in Khatam city. It continues in Yazd province around Abarkoh and to the northwest and enters Isfahan province from a place called Kafe Taghestan in the east of Gavkhoni. Considering the upstream development plans of the province and the centrality of the development of east, the pipeline approaches Naeein transportation axis of Isfahan after passing the route around Harand, and continues to Segzi. Then it moves to the north to the city of Komsheche in Borkhar and enters the northern distribution tank that is its last destination.

      Project’s target area

In this plan, after traveling 750 kilometers in the three provinces of Hormozgan, Kerman, and Yazd, the pipeline will enter Isfahan province from southeastern end, the water transfer will continue from the east of the province and the east of the Gavkhoni swamp, and will continue to the north in the area of komsheche of borkhar. It will come to its end in northern distribution tank.

In this part of the report, a summary of the general specifications of the water transmission line project from Oman Sea to Isfahan is presented.

The main components of the plan

The main components of the water transfer plan from Oman Sea to Isfahan are as follows:

1- Seawater extraction facility and desalination system

2- The access road and executive operations runway of the transmission line route

      3- Water transmission lines

      4- Reservoir pumping stations

      5- Energy supply system

Water extraction facilities from the sea and desalination system

By carrying out technical studies and examining the shape and form of the seabed and the behavior of the waves by consultant, as well as comparing different methods of harvesting water from the sea, the method of harvesting from the depth was selected. According to the calculations made on the optimal capacity, the design of the catchment suitable for the annual harvest of one billion and five hundred million cubic meters have been considered.

This amount will be approximately equal to 600 million cubic meters of fresh water per year. With the phase-by-phase implementation of the project in the first phase, the building needed for one third of the capacity will be built and equipped to meet 200 million cubic meter capacity of the project.

In the desalination sector, modular units with a capacity of 100,000 cubic meters per day are designed and built based on the international standards. According to the capacity of 200 million cubic meters and assuming a capacity of 70 million cubic meters per year, three desalination units will be needed.

      Preliminary hydraulic calculations

According to conducted hydraulic calculations, the specifications of the required transmission system are as follows. A transmission line with a diameter of 2000 mm, a transmission capacity of 6.4 cubic meters per second along with all the necessary facilities and equipment needed to be implemented for a length of 920 km from Sirik desalination facility to Isfahan in the existing water transmission routes. The following tables present the specifications of these lines in five sections accompanying their related estimations.
